e for emergence: From Neurology of Art to the Art of AGI with Dr. Vahid Rostami

  • PRAKSIS 19 Rådhusgata Oslo, Oslo, 0158 Norway (map)

Faced with present-day human crises and technological transformations, the need for constructive dialogue between the fields of art and science has never been more urgent. e for emergence is a new series of art and science dialogues convened by Anita Akbarzadeh Solbu and Susanne M. Winterling. They invite you to join the conversation, learn, share knowledge and insights and be inspired.

In this first talk in the series, From Neurology of Art to the Art of AGI, Dr Vahid Rostami will explore how the human brain processes and engages with art, examining the neural mechanisms involved in visual perception, emotional response, and the creation of meaning. By breaking down how different brain regions interact to interpret forms, colours, and patterns, we gain insight into the cognitive and emotional complexity that underlies the human experience of art. As breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) and artificial general intelligence (AGI) enable machines to perform creative tasks, intriguing questions arise about how their internal world representations differ from our own. This talk will investigate how AGI might perceive, interpret, and create art, and how these differences in cognition and perception could influence the art they produce. Can AGI-generated art evoke the same depth of experience as human art? And what do these differences in world representation mean for the future of artistic creation?

Dr Rostami’s talk will be followed by a panel conversation with the initiators of e for emergence Anita Akbarzadeh Solbu and Susanne M. Winterling, as well as time for questions, comments and dynamics with the audience.

About Dr. Vahid Rostami

Dr. Vahid Rostami is the Director of Artificial Intelligence at Pendulum, where he leads the development of innovative AI models designed to address real-world challenges. With expertise in building models for studying dynamical systems—including perception and action in the brain and real-world complex networks such as supply chains—he applies an interdisciplinary approach to create AI solutions that are both sophisticated and practical. Beyond his professional work, Dr. Rostami has a deep personal interest in the intersection of neuroscience, art, and artificial intelligence. Fascinated by the neurology of art, he explores how neural mechanisms drive creativity and art perception. This passion enriches his perspective on AI, inspiring innovative approaches that bridge science and art. Dr. Rostami also serves as an advisor at the University of Cologne, contributing to academic research and advancements in AI and neuroscience.
