The current greenwashing of certain “sustainable” fibers and recycling, alongside obfuscation of processes, has left the consumer in a muddled state. Public bodies are currently taking an interest in how marketing in this area needs to be addressed and stricter regulation of what corporations can and cannot claim.

PRAKSIS welcomes Research Professor Ingun Grimstad Klepp from Consumption Research Norway at Oslo Metropolitan University and Editor Tone Skårdal Tobiasson of nicefashion.org to talk about their work in the area of clothing and sustainability. The two will discuss greenwashing and related issues, including how the emphasis for change is being placed on the consumer and away from public and corporate responsibility.

Klepp and Tobiasson have published several books together, on laundry and clothing care, on local value chains for textile production (wool) and have just sent to press the book Lettkledd (Easy dress – well-dressed with little environmental impact). This most recent book attempts to unravel the conundrum of lack of knowledge on quality, sustainability and all the processes involved in both the production and consumption of apparel – and the constant barrage of fast fashion marketing.

This event is free and will take place in English due to international setting. It is part of PRAKSIS’s sixteenth residency, Live or Buy, which intends to re-think ecologies of consumption in intimate, personal and physical ways. It has been developed with artist Nina Sarnelle, designer and researcher Ida Falck Øien and clothing label HAiKw/.
