Addressing the control of reproduction, collaborative artist duo, @criticaldías discuss recent projects that investigate crossovers between the regulation of technologies of assisted reproduction, and the ‘reproduction’ of dominant culture.
@criticaldías’ practice maps how specific historical contexts and technologies produce particular affects and ways of seeing the world. Focusing on the fraught relationship between queer bodies and national memory, they have a particular concern with archival methods and practices. Their work takes many forms, including collective performance, audio-guided tours, video, publications, interactive digital-human platforms and ceramics.
@criticaldías is Rebecca Close and Anyely Marín Cisneros. Their work embraces anti-racism in contemporary art practices, new media research and feminist epistemologies and poetics. Anyely works at the intersection of the politics of the body and history of science to map emergent racist logics across big data, algorithms, social media and Artificial Intelligence. She is a member of Red Conceptualismos del Sur and the Group for Black Studies and Activisms at Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona. Close is a new media artist and poet whose projects have traced notions of 'contagion' and 'transmission' as they cross the fields of communication media, medical theories and critical pedagogy. Her first collection valid, virtual, vegetable reality won the Melita Hume Prize (2018). @criticaldias were 2018-2019 fellows at the Center for Art, Design and Social Research.
This talk part of a series being held alongside the residency Carrying Histories which looks at the responsibility and burden of working with historical subject matter, with the aim of building cross-cultural awareness of past and present power structures.
