These are Situationist Times

  • Torpedo 28 Rostockgata Oslo, 0191 Norway (map)

Jakob Jakobsen, Guttorm Guttormsgaard and Ellef Prestsæter discuss the legacy and relevance of situationist strategies of publication. The point of departure will be The Situationist Times, a magazine edited and published by the Dutch artist Jacqueline de Jong in the years 1962–1967. In its multilingual, trans-disciplinary and cross-cultural exuberance, The Situationist Times became one of the most exciting and playful magazines of the 1960s. Throughout its six remarkably diverse issues, it challenged not only the notion of what it means to be a situationist, but also broader traditional understandings of culture and of the way it is created, formatted and shared. Other key points of interest will be the French Internationale Situationniste, the German Spur, and the Scandinavian Drakabygget magazine.

Guttorm Guttormsgaard is a Norwegian artist known for his printed woks, large scale decorations and archival project. His first discovery of The Situationist Times in the 1960s had a profound influence on his thinking.

Jakob Jakobsen is a Danish artist who has contributed significantly to the understanding and mobilization of situationist ideas through through various projects, including the anthologies Expect Anything Fear Nothing: The Situationist Movement in Scandinavia and Elsewhere and Cosmonauts of the Future: Texts from the Situationist Movement in Scandinavia and Elsewhere (both edited with Mikke Bolt).

Ellef Prestsæter is a PhD fellow in art history at the University of Oslo and one of the curators of The Situationist Times: Same Player Shoots Again, which is on view at Torpedo until September 2, 2018 (click here for details).

This roundtable discussion is free to attend, will take place in English in the setting of the exhibition The Situationist Times: Same Player Shoots Again at PUB. It is part of PRAKSIS's tenth residency, The Collective Subject of History which has been developed with Elvira Dyangani Ose and Guttormsgaard’s Archive.
